Gaining entry into LIV was just as easy as Miguel promised. Federico greeted me like an honored guest, placed a satin ‘VIP’ band around my wrist, and escorted me into the VIP section. I caught a lot of hateful eyes, but some curious, from the girls surrounding the velvet rope. I tried not to look too hard, but something told me I might chat with a few of them later.

We descended a clear glass staircase toward the dance floor, which was slowly filling with partiers. The room was easily three stories high, lined on three sides with an up and downstairs VIP section, all facing an enormous DJ booth situated behind a catwalk that ran lengthwise in the room. Pulsing bass rumbled in the soles of my feet, and neon lights of every color danced in time with the music. A giant seven-pointed star made of individual square mirrors adorned the ceiling, bouncing the lights around the room.

Federico escorted me to the bar in the downstairs VIP section, instructed the bartender to put my drinks on the house, and then left with a kiss on the cheek and his sincere hopes I enjoyed the party.

Whatever Miguel did for this guy, it had to be something good.

I secured an old-fashioned, served to me in an actual glass as opposed to the plastic cups people clutched on the dance floor, then slowly made my way around the enormous room.

Scanning for targets.

Many of the VIP booths were still empty, with ‘Reserved’ signs resting next to prepared buckets of mixers. From my research, I knew you needed to drop big money to have a chair in this place. Merely being allowed in VIP was one thing; now I had to get an invitation to sit.

Although I had little practice, I did my best to look alluring as I strolled among the booths. Most of the people on the ground floor seemed rather pedestrian, just your average wealthy playboys throwing daddy’s money away on a five-thousand dollar bottle of BeefEaters gin.

Deciding I needed to elevate my game, I took to the stairs and repeated my sultry strolling act on the second floor.

Here the booths were a little further apart, and several had ropes with security personnel preventing unwelcome guests from joining the party.

Now, this looked a little more intriguing.

I sidled closer to the row of booths, peeking in to see if anyone looked interesting. These booths were like boxes overlooking the crowd below, with a glowing frame of neon lights separating each from the one nearby.

“Are you lost, sweetheart?” Panic blossomed in my chest, and I looked up to find an obviously drunk, overweight bald man in a shiny blue suit. “If you can’t find your way back to your table, you’re welcome to sit at mine.” He gestured to the booth next to the one I’d just been peeking into. From the looks of it, it was just him and five women, all dressed similar to me, smiling excessively, like it was some sort of competition.
